Australian showcase unveils the impressive debut of Polestar 3 as a luxury SUV

Polestar recently showcased its upcoming Polestar 3 electric family SUV during a roadshow in Australia. I had the opportunity to personally see the vehicle at Polestar’s Melbourne Space and here are my initial impressions of the brand’s first large electric SUV.

The exterior of the Polestar 3 has a sleek and elegant appearance. Similar to the new Polestar 2, the front grille is seamlessly covered from one “Thor hammer” headlight to the other. What sets the Polestar 3 apart from other SUVs on the road is its lower front, deviating from the typical taller and bulkier SUV design.

Moving to the interior, the Polestar 3 exudes elegance with a narrow widescreen display behind the steering wheel, providing essential driving information. The steering wheel itself has a minimalist design with a flat bottom, giving it a sporty feel when held. Additionally, there’s a larger vertically mounted infotainment screen featuring all the Android Automotive with Google in-built features. Navigating through the system is similar to the recently tested Polestar 2 refresh.

Convenience is prioritized with a wireless charging pad located underneath the screen for easy phone charging. The front seats are also comfortable with excellent lumbar support and a sporty feel. However, it remains to be seen how they fare on Australian roads. The rear seats feature a soft leather finish, enclosed cup holders in the center armrest, and eye-catching yellow seat belts for a sporty touch. Legroom in the back is ample, but the comfort level for long road trips still needs testing.

As for storage, the boot offers plenty of space and includes a hidden storage compartment underneath the boot shelf. A retractable parcel shelf is also provided to conceal items in the boot.

Overall, the Polestar 3 surpasses the premium feel and classier look of the Polestar 2. However, this comes as expected with a starting price of $132,900 excluding on-road costs for the Long-range Dual motor edition, which boasts 360 kW of power. The top-of-the-range Polestar 3, Long-range Dual motor with Performance Pack showcased during the event, comes in at $141,900 plus on-roads.

The Performance Pack enhances the power of the dual-electric motors, enabling them to produce up to 380 kW of power and 910 Nm of torque. The Polestar 3 on display in Melbourne, equipped with the pilot pack and plus pack, had a total cost of $175,771.

Both versions of the Polestar 3 are equipped with a 111 kWh battery pack, delivering a range of up to 610 km according to WLTP standards. We eagerly await the opportunity to test drive the new Polestar 3 when it becomes available in 2024.

Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop in Melbourne, provided these insights. He is a mechanical engineer with a passion for cars, particularly EVs, and aims to reduce transport emissions in Australia. Riz currently drives a red Tesla Model 3.
