Rosberg X Racing exhibits absolute dominance during the Extreme E Island X Prix weekend in Sardinia

The Sardinian Extreme E double header this weekend was a major success for Rosberg X Racing, as they emerged as the winners for both Saturday’s and Sunday’s races. Team Principal Nico Rosberg, a former Formula 1 Champion, was present to celebrate the victories with his drivers Johan Kristoffersson and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky.

The start of the Grand Final was filled with tension as all five cars fought for position on a narrow lane. Kristoffersson ended up on the grass verge but fortunately, the car remained undamaged. RJ Anderson from No.99 GMC HUMMER EV Chip Ganassi Racing took the lead, followed by Timmy Hansen from Andretti Altawkilat Extreme E, and Sébastien Loeb from ABT Cupra in third.

Loeb, substituting for Nasser Al-Attiyah, suffered a puncture which caused him to drop back, allowing Mattias Ekström from Acciona Sainz to move up to fourth. Kristoffersson took advantage of ABT Cupra’s difficulties and overtook both Ekström and Loeb before the switch zone.

As the top four teams left the switch zone in close formation, Åhlin-Kottulinsky managed to pass Catie Munnings from Andretti Altawkilat Extreme E and secure second place. Unfortunately, Munnings’s car rolled over, forcing the Andretti Altawkilat team to retire from the race. Although Anderson crossed the finish line in first for No.99 GMC HUMMER EV Chip Ganassi Racing, a penalty for exiting the switch zone early gave Rosberg X Racing the win, with Acciona Sainz finishing in second.

“It feels great to take the win today!” said Kristoffersson. Despite a difficult start, he managed to recover and drive at a fast pace. Åhlin-Kottulinsky praised Kristoffersson for his performance and credited teamwork for their success.

In the second race, RXR dominated qualifying, putting them in a strong position for the Grand Final. Kristoffersson strategically dropped back to fourth at the start and then made a decisive move to take first place. Despite pressure from Ekström and Anderson, Kristoffersson maintained his lead until the switch zone. Catie Munnings from Andretti Altawkilat Extreme E made a late surge and secured the third podium spot.

“We had a great weekend here in Sardinia,” said Kristoffersson. He expressed some initial hesitation about his decisive move but managed to get through and control the pace. Åhlin-Kottulinsky praised Kristoffersson and expressed her disbelief at their two wins in Sardinia.

Nico Rosberg, delighted with the team’s performance, recognized the strong competition in Extreme E. RXR’s two wins have propelled them to second place in the Championship standings, with Veloce dropping to third. Acciona Sainz remains in the lead.

The weekend was less favorable for Veloce, which had held the top spot in the Championship before the race. They failed to reach the Grand Final on Saturday due to a puncture in qualifying but managed to win the Redemption Race. However, technical issues and collisions in Sunday’s race resulted in a fifth-place finish.

The Sardinian Extreme E race weekend also marked the debut of 16-year-old Lia Block, daughter of racing legend Ken Block, on the Carl Cox Motorsport team. Block showcased impressive skills throughout the weekend and will be one to watch in the remaining races of the season.

With four more Grand Finals to go, the competition remains fierce in the Extreme E season. RXR’s strong performance has put them back in the championship battle, and there’s still everything to race for.
