VW unveils all-new GTi in Munich

Volkswagen has unveiled a new GTi model in its ID electric vehicle range. The GTi variant of the ID.2 will be based on VW’s MEB platform designed for smaller cars and will offer front-wheel drive. With a price expected to be under €30,000, the GTi version aims to cater to the growing demand for affordable electric vehicles. Volkswagen is also committed to creating options in the under-€20,000 price sector to compete with upcoming releases from other manufacturers. The regular ID.2 model has a WLTP range of close to 280 miles and delivers 222 horsepower.

Andreas Mindt, Head of Design at Volkswagen Passenger Cars, stated that the GTi model provides a preview of the new design language of Volkswagen, which focuses on stability, likeability, and excitement. The regular ID.2 can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in around 7 seconds, and the GTi version is expected to have a faster acceleration time. The top speed of the GTi model is likely to exceed the regular ID.2’s 99mph but is unlikely to go beyond 120mph on the autobahn. The ID.2 is also expected to have a spacious boot with a capacity of approximately 490 liters with the seats up and over 1,300 liters with the seats down.

Volkswagen is set to introduce several new electric models in the coming years, including the ID.3, ID. Buzz with a long wheelbase, ID.7, and a compact electric SUV. The company aims to have an 80% share of the EV market in Europe and plans to produce only electric vehicles in Europe by 2033. However, competition in the market is intensifying, with other manufacturers like Hyundai committing significant investments to secure a place in the global EV market.

Overall, Volkswagen’s GTi variant of the ID.2 aims to appeal to consumers looking for a sportier and performance-oriented electric vehicle option. With its affordable price range and Volkswagen’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup, the company hopes to capture a significant share of the growing EV market.
