Tesla has surprised many by introducing cheaper versions of its flagship Model S sedan and Model X electric SUV for the North American market. Despite these changes, both new Standard Range variants still offer fast charging capabilities of up to 250 kW, suggesting that the battery and battery management system are similar to the current dual-motor models.
The main attraction of these new models is their price. They are $10,000 cheaper than the current base models, with the Model S Standard Range priced at $78,490 and the Model X Standard Range priced at $88,490.
While some may see the detuning in performance as a drawback, the power offered by the Standard Range models is sufficient for many drivers seeking comfortable transportation. Tesla likely made this decision based on customer feedback and data collected from current Model S and Model X vehicles.
In the first half of 2023, Tesla produced nearly 40,000 Model S and Model X vehicles, with 19,437 in Q1 and 19,489 in Q2.
These new variants will also be available in Canada but are unlikely to come to Australia, as Tesla has informed local customers that it does not intend to sell any Model S or Model X in the right-hand-drive market.
