UK manufacturing plant exclusively dedicated to producing 100% electric vehicles inaugurated by Stellantis

Stellantis, the multinational automotive corporation, has officially transformed its Ellesmere Port manufacturing facility in the UK into the country’s first electric vehicle (EV)-only plant. This groundbreaking move marks the first Stellantis plant globally dedicated solely to electric vehicle production. With a massive £100 million investment, the Ellesmere Port plant has undergone significant renovations to become a hub for EV manufacturing.

The launch of all-electric vans at Ellesmere Port is a significant milestone in the automotive industry. Guided by Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 commitment, this ambitious venture aims to make the global group carbon-neutral by 2038.

The Vauxhall Combo Electric, along with its counterparts Opel Combo Electric, Peugeot e-Partner, and Citroën ë-Berlingo, will be manufactured at this innovative plant. In response to increasing demand for electric vehicles across Europe, the plant will also produce the Fiat E-Doblò compact vans, expanding Ellesmere Port’s capabilities.

Diane Miller, Plant Director at Ellesmere Port, expressed optimism about the facility’s future. She stated, “The start of electric vehicle production at Ellesmere Port signals a bright future for the plant, ensuring it will continue to manufacture vehicles for many years to come. With Vauxhall’s long history of UK manufacturing, it’s especially fitting that the first electric model to roll off Ellesmere Port’s production line is a Combo Electric. While the welcome addition of the Fiat E-Doblò to the plant is a positive reflection of increasing electric vehicle demand.”

To accommodate this transformation, the Ellesmere Port plant underwent various critical changes. These included establishing a battery assembly shop, upgrading the General Assembly, and relocating the body shop. These measures not only made the plant more energy-efficient but also resulted in a 60% reduction in its total site area, boosting productivity.

The transformation also includes a new test track and the final stages of construction for a parts distribution warehouse, scheduled to become fully operational early next year. Sustainability was a key focus of the upgrade, aligning with Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 commitment. Initiatives such as a more energy-efficient paint application process and the installation of a localised combined heat and power (CHP) plant have been implemented to reduce emissions.

In their pursuit of carbon neutrality, the Ellesmere Port plant is now striving to harness solar and wind power while connecting to the HyNet North West Hydrogen Pipeline, further reducing their carbon footprint.

Ellesmere Port has a rich history in British automotive manufacturing. Established in 1962, the facility has produced iconic models such as the Vauxhall Viva, Chevette, and various generations of the Vauxhall and Opel Astra. Over 4.1 million units have been produced at the Ellesmere Port plant since 1985, solidifying its position in the UK automotive landscape.

One of the first electric vehicles to be manufactured at Ellesmere Port, the Vauxhall Combo Electric, boasts impressive features. It is equipped with a 50kWh lithium-ion battery and a 100kW (136PS) electric motor, providing a range of up to 175 miles according to WLTP standards. Additionally, a rapid 0-80% charge can be achieved in just 30 minutes using a 100kW rapid charger.

This shift towards electric vehicle manufacturing at Ellesmere Port solidifies Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroën, and Fiat as the only mainstream automotive brands producing vans in Britain. In addition to the Ellesmere Port plant, these brands continue to manufacture vans at the Stellantis factory in Luton, a legacy that dates back to 1905.

Kemi Badenoch, the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, praised the significance of this development. She stated, “Today’s announcement, in which Ellesmere Port becomes the UK’s first electric vehicle-only manufacturing plant and the first Stellantis plant globally dedicated to electric vehicles, is a very visible demonstration that this Government has got the right plan for the UK’s automotive sector. Alongside recent investments from other major vehicle manufacturers, we are ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of automotive innovation while securing jobs in this critical industry and its wider supply chain.”

The transformation of the Ellesmere Port plant serves as a beacon of hope and innovation in the automotive industry’s pursuit of a sustainable future. It embodies a commitment to a greener, more environmentally conscious future.
